The clinician

Nephrology standards applied to weight management

The Kidney Weight Clinic is led by Professor Mohammed Mahdi Althaf, a UK consultant renal specialist. The service exists because people with reduced kidney function were being offered either no weight-loss support at all, or support from services with no renal expertise.

How we practise

Four principles behind the service

Measured, not assumed

Baseline weight, kidney function and medication history are documented before any decision about treatment is made.

Reviewed on a schedule

Six-weekly clinical review and a structured 26-week outcome review, with defined maximum treatment durations discussed openly.

Renal-first prescribing

Dose escalation is paced around fluid balance, gastrointestinal tolerance and kidney function, not around a commercial timetable.

One clinical record

Weight, dose history and creatinine live in a single monitored record, with every entry attributed to the person who made it.

Where you are seen

Initial and review consultations take place face to face at Spire. Between appointments, monitoring happens on this platform, which is the clinical system of record for weight, dose and creatinine.

Editorial and review policy

Every article in the knowledge hub carries a named author and a medically reviewed byline with the review date. Guidance is referenced to NICE, the NHS and the UK Kidney Association, and is written to be read by patients rather than clinicians.

What this service is not

This is not an online prescribing shop. No medicine is issued from a web form, no payment is taken on this website, and treatment is not continued without review.
